Smile to Make a Difference!

Smiling is one of the simplest forms of positive non-verbal communication!

Studies have shown that people who smile more often are generally happier than those who do not smile. This can be even when they are forcing themselves to smile. Smiling changes the chemicals in your body by sending signals to your brain to feel happier. It activates the neural messaging and releases the feel-good neurotransmitters like dopamine, endorphins and serotonin which in turn helps to relax your body. Studies have shown that this can also lower your heart rate and blood pressure.

When others around you are smiling, it is nearly impossible to stay unhappy or grumpy. Without trying, smiling does help to increase your happiness.

Smiling can also affect how people see you and treat you. A study shown in the Neuropsychologia journal stated that people seeing smiling faces activates the orbitofrontal cortex, which suggests that having people smile at your makes you feel rewarded.

And… a simple smile can do amazing things like:

  • Giving the person you smile at a ‘lift up’
  • Creating an opportunity to make a new friend
  • Making yourself feel good
  • The opportunity to meet your next referral partner
  • Makes other people smile- smiling is contagious and can make the experience for others a good one as well.

Remember to SMILE when you are at a networking event. You will be amazed at how much better it will make you feel, and it will certainly make others feel good.
