🔔 Replacing turbo
Are you betting on your turbo playing its sports car best every time you hit the road? Turbo makes a ton of boost through a sweet BMW valve and the stock setup might not always be up to the task. If you’ve gone to the track or autocross, you’ve probably heard of or had the dreaded “turbo cormudgen” valve. If you’re driving an N54, you might be long gone before 3500 rpm even comes about. However, driving in a manner where the vanos is screaming might not be the best idea for a road car. The N54 engine is over a decade old at this point and we’re starting to see the failure of turbos and will probably see them more often in the coming years.
Replacing the turbo on your BMW is something you’d need to bring the car to a shop for. We’ve seen DIY videos and posts on places like Pensburgh and BimmerPost where the owners attempt it at home. However, this isn’t something I would want to drive without. Before you even start, commit to a month of downtime if you are attempting this on your own. If you bring it to a trusted shop, typical turn around time can be as little as a morning or as long as a week, depending on the workload of course.
Why would you replace the turbo?
The new “neue klasse” of turbo replacements these days is to just grab a used or reconditioned turbo off eBay for like $200 and do a quick swap. However, that is a terrible idea. Why?
First off, the turbos on these cars are run at a pretty high output and they accumulate a fair amount of carbon buildup. So unless the core is at least hot tanked, it’s not worth bolting back on. Remember, the last place that turbo lived was inside of an engine bay, not a cleanroom. Not to mention who knows how long it has been since that turbo was put on someone’s car and how lightly and gently it was driven.
Secondly, the main point: If you’re going to open up your car, why not do it right? Why not do everything you can to make sure everything that’s “near” the turbo is done right on that side of the engine? If you’re doing the turbo, that is the perfect time to at least take a look at your oil feeder line which is known to fail (depending on year and ownership) and hit a few things like coolant hoses, etc. If nothing else, it’s peace of mind knowing that you aren’t going to have to tie up your injectors because you’ll be there already doing the turbo.
So what’s this going to cost? Obviously if you’re doing this on a lift with all the air tools and have done it before, you’re going to save a fortune. However, if you are like me, have a little bit of ability, enjoy turning wrenches and are doing this in your garage, what’s it going to cost?

As you can see, there’s a lot of parts that go into making sure this is an install that isn’t going to cause a lot of trouble down the road. Whether it be an exhaust gasket or a manifold gasket, replacing them while they open up the front, will be more cost and time effective in the long run. Then there are the things like Vanos solenoid gaskets and throttle housing gaskets that aren’t as critical to replace, but while it’s open, why not give yourself some peace of mind?
